El Mercado/Market Square
From early morning until late at night, Market Square is alive with activity. Visitors browse through the 50 specialty shops at El Mercado-- a unique shopping area patterned after an authentic Mexican market. Market Square is also the scene of most Hispanic festivals. Several times a year, food and beer booths spring up along-side the Victorian lamps on the Market's square and the strains of mariachi music blend with the excitement of Mexican dances.
La Villita, which means "little town", is across from the Convention Center and adjacent to the River Walk. It is a unique arts and crafts community of twenty-six shops with working artisans, three restaurants and a Post Office located in this beautifully landscaped historic district. With the entire area newly restored, this colorful area provides leisurely shopping and dining in an era of the past. Numerous events are held year 'round and there are five facilities available for event rental.
The Paseo del Rio, in the heart of downtown, is the pride of the city. Lush green subtropical foliage lines the banks of the peaceful jade green river. Cobblestone walkways lead visitors to the river-level restaurants, shops and night-clubs. The river threads its way through the city one level below the busy streets. Here, along the horseshoe-shaped riverbend, the river is shaded by towering cypresses, oaks and willows and bordered by gardens of flowering ornamental plants. River boats ply the Paseo's festive 21 blocks, which are imaginatively lighted at night and studded with sidewalk cafes, gift shops, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels.
